Hunter killed after his dog shot him by stepping on shotgun

(Dayton247now.com) — A Turkish man who was out hunting over Thanksgiving weekend was reportedly killed after his own dog stepped on a gun, causing it to go off.

32-year-old Ozgur Gevrekoglu was loading equipment into his vehicle on Sunday when his pooch somehow set off a loaded shotgun, according to the newspaper Middle East Eye.

Gevrekoglu and some friends were out hunting in the Samsun Province of Turkey, the report says, adding that the shooting occurred when they were all packing up to leave.

After being shot, Gevrekoglu reportedly died before paramedics arrived. His body was taken to a hospital for an autopsy while police investigated.

While a human friend of Gevrekoglu was initially arrested by police investigating the death, according to the report, that person was later released, and authorities do not suspect any foul play.

Gevrekoglu had just become a father two weeks before his death, Middle East Eye reports. He is described by reports to be an avid hunter and dog lover.

Social media posts obtained by the New York Post show Gevrekoglu posing in several pictures with his beloved dogs and spoils from his various hunts.

Gevrekoglu apparently owned many dogs, and it has not been revealed exactly which dog caused the gun to go off.

Gun safety rules from the National Rifle Association insist that gun owners always keep their firearms unloaded when they aren't in use.

ALWAYS Keep The Gun Unloaded Until Ready To Use," the NRA says on its website. "If you do not know how to open the action or inspect the chamber(s), leave the gun alone and get help from someone who does."
