CBSNews.com - The lights were lit Wednesday night on the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree for the unofficial start to the holiday season.
With the flip of a switch, all 50,000 LED lights illuminated this year's tree.

The fabulous Radio City Rockettes bring the “Snow.” Here are a few facts you might not know about the famous dance troupe.
The Radio City Rockettes got their start way back in 1925 and have been American icons for nearly 100 years.
Initially dubbed the "Roxyettes," the dance troupe began performing at Radio City Music Hall in the early 1930s before eventually being renamed the "Radio City Music Hall Rockettes" in 1934.
Since then they've performed thousands of show at Radio City Music Hall, including the ever-popular "Christmas Spectacular," which is performed annually from November to January.
Here are few fast facts about the Radio City Rockettes you might not know.
The average Rockette is between 5'6" – 5'10" tall
To be a Rockette, dancers must proficient in tap, ballet, modern and jazz.
The dance troupe began with 16 dancers and there are now 36.
The Rockettes joined the USO in entertaining the troops during World War II.
More than 100,000 people requested tickets for 6,200 seats at Radio City Music Hall's opening night on December 27, 1932.
The first time the Rockettes performed in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was in 1957.
After Radio City Music Hall was scheduled to close in 1978, the Rockettes spearheaded the campaign that saved the theatre.

Gwen Stefani opens tonight’s annual holiday celebration by performing the perennial kids’ favorite “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.”
During a recent appearance on TODAY, the singer and “The Voice” coach expressed her excitement about performing during the tree lighting ceremony.
"This is one of those things you grew up hearing about,” Stefani told TODAY. “I was from Los Angeles, so I never went to New York when I was a little girl. So it’s even a bigger deal for me to be here and be part of this.”
